Owning the generic definitions in one place\nlets those packages register methods without masking one\nanother when several are attached at once. The generics cover\ninverse probability weighted estimation, effective sample size,\nand the metadata carried by causal weight vectors, and the\npackage supplies the abstract causal weight class and the\nresult class those estimates are returned in, together with the\nmethods both classes carry, so that the ecosystem packages\ninherit them rather than writing their own. The design follows\nthat of the 'generics' package, which provides commonly used S3\ngenerics for the same purpose: letting packages share a single\ndefinition instead of each defining its own.",
